As we begin a new month with longer days, something stay the same! Let's remind ourselves about some fire safety tips we should practice in our homes and with our families, all year round! While sometimes they are the obvious ones, they remain important!
1. Install Smoke Alarms: Ensure you have smoke alarms installed on every level of your home, especially near sleeping areas. Test them monthly and replace batteries at least once a year.
2. Create an Escape Plan: Develop a fire escape plan with your family. Practice it regularly, ensuring everyone knows the quickest way out of each room and where to meet outside.
3. Keep Fire Extinguishers Handy: Place fire extinguishers in key areas of your home, such as the kitchen, garage, and workshop. Learn how to use them properly.
4. Maintain Heating Systems: Have your heating systems, including furnaces, chimneys, and wood stoves, inspected and cleaned annually to prevent chimney fires and carbon monoxide leaks.
5. Cook Safely: Stay in the kitchen while cooking and keep flammable items like dish towels and curtains away from heat sources. Never leave cooking food unattended.
6. Be Cautious with Candles: Keep candles at least a foot away from anything flammable, such as curtains or decorations. Never leave candles burning unattended, and consider using flameless LED candles as a safer alternative.
7. Electrical Safety: Check electrical cords for fraying or damage, and replace them if necessary. Avoid overloading outlets and extension cords. Consider hiring a licensed electrician for any electrical work.
8. Practice Fireplace Safety: Use a fireplace screen to prevent sparks from flying into the room. Ensure the fire is completely extinguished before going to bed or leaving the house.
9. Store Flammable Materials Safely: Keep flammable liquids, such as gasoline, paint thinners, and solvents, in tightly sealed containers away from heat sources. 10. Stay Vigilant: Be aware of potential fire hazards in your home and take steps to mitigate them. Encourage family members to report any fire hazards they notice.
